Abstract

One of the paradigms of public health is that in developed countries, individuals of lower socio-economic status (SES) tend to have poorer health. Numerous studies have demonstrated a higher prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases 1 and type 2 diabetes, 2 a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease 3 and some cancers, 4 and higher allcause, 5 cardiovascular 6 and cancer mortality 7 in lower SES groups. This phenomenon, commonly known as the "social gradient," may reflect the fact that lower SES is associated with barriers in access to quality health care; environmental exposures; and limitations in knowledge, time and opportunity for making healthy lifestyle choices.
