This first edition of our new CRDCN Research Highlight series summarizes research findings regarding the role of various factors on adverse mental health outcomes in the military. Based on the Canadian Community Health Survey - Canadian Forces Supplement, the study confirms that multiple traumatic experiences increase the risk of mental disorders, while perceived social support decreases it. Authors recommend adopting both pre-deployment and post-deployment strategies to reduce mental distress following combat and peacekeeping missions. Read on.

Last fall, University of Alberta's RDC hosted the 2011 CRDCN National Conference where researchers, policymakers and practitioners from across Canada took part in a critical examination of the many social and economic issues arising from population aging. Several Power Point presentations are now available, including key note speech by Susan McDaniel and presentations by renowned experts such as Norah Keating, Janet Fast, Peter Hicks and Michael Wolfson. The 10th annual symposium of Cochrane Canada will be held in Winnipeg on May 9 and 10, 2012. The theme of the Symposium is Health Evidence for ALL. To promote the use of detailed microdata in graduate research projects, the Quebec Inter-university Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS) has developed a Grant Matching Programme for Masters and PhD students. The 2012 competition is now open. This year, the QICSS, along with the FQRSC, also offers international internship scholarships. Deadline for submissions is February 15, 2012. With the goal of establishing and nurturing critical links between policy makers and external researchers in support of evidence-based public policy, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in partnership with the Health Canada Strategic Policy Branch, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the British Columbia Ministry of Health offer a short-term fellowship for highly qualified individuals who are engaged in health research at PhD, post-doctoral and independent researcher levels.
